1. General information 

The goal of this module is the study of English-language films from 1925 to 1975. It is aligned with the following Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDG) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda:
Goal 4: Quality education. Goal 5: Gender equality. Goal 10: Reduced inequalities. Goal 16: Peace, justice and strong institutions. Goal 17: Partnerships to achieve the goals

2. Learning results 

Learning outcomes:
-Students are able to explore and discuss (in English, level C1.1) stylistic and cultural aspects of films released between 1925 and 1975.
-Students are able to discuss the ideological meanings of a given film in English (level C1.1).
-Students are able to write essays in English (level C1.1) on aesthetic and cultural aspects of films released between 1925 and 1975.
-Students are familiar with the bibliography discussed or read during the course.
-Students can write an essay in English on the aesthetic and cultural aspects of the given films. 
-Students are able to read, listen to and give their opinion on specific aspects of the bibliography or the texts analysed in the module.
-Students use the concepts and tools necessary for the formal and cultural analysis of filmic texts produced between 1925 and 1975.
-Students are able to analyse the texts and contexts studied during the course.

3. Syllabus

Part 1

1 The transition to sound and early experimentation in the 1930s. Early sound films. Comedy. The films of Ernst Lubitsch.

2 The Production Code and Classical Hollywood Cinema. The star system and the studio system. Screwball comedy

3 The Paramount decision and the 1950s. The Post-War and cultural change. The comedies of seduction

Part 2

4 The films of Alfred Hitchcock. Hitchcock’s influences. Point of view and film form. Major themes.

5 Film Noir. The creation of noir. Visual style and narrative structure. Alienation and determinism. Noir and feminism.

6 The New American Cinema.

4. Academic activities

In-class activities:

a) Lectures: Presentation of formal, historical and cultural aspects.

b) Seminars: Individual and group work. Textual analysis.

c) Individual and/or group activities: How to write an academic essay. Feedback on essays.

Out-of-class activities:

  1. Watching the movies of the syllabus. Writing essays for the continuous assessment option.
  2. Reading compulsory texts in the reading list.
  3.  Students’ revision of the module contents.
  4. Final exam.

5. Assessment system

FIRST CALL

Depending on the number of students, one of these evaluation systems will be proposed:

Course work:

a) Four essays on the compulsory films (600 words) (60 %)

b) Two essays on two specific aspects of the compulsory readings (800-1000 words) (40%).

c) Attendance and active participation in class

 

Global exam

Part 1: Theory (50%). One or two questions about a text in the reading list.

Part 2: Essay (50%).

Students need to pass both parts in order to pass the module.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

  1. Students must demonstrate both an informed and a critical understanding of the key theories discussed in class.
  2. Students must show familiarity with different modes of film analysis.
  3. Students should be familiar with the genres and film traditions discussed in class.
  4. Students should be able to write an academic essay in English (C1.1) on a specific aspect of one of the compulsory movies.

1. Información básica de la asignatura

Esta asignatura tiene como objetivo el estudio de los textos audiovisuales, desarrollando la capacidad analítica y crítica del alumnado acerca de los movimientos artísticos y culturales relevantes para el análisis del cine desde 1925 hasta 1975. Estos planteamientos y objetivos están alineados con los siguientes Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) de la Agenda 2030 de Naciones Unidas:

Objetivo 4: Educación de calidad.

Objetivo 5: Igualdad de género.

Objetivo 10: Reducción de las desigualdades.

Objetivo 16: Paz, justicia e instituciones sólidas.

Objetivo 17: Alianzas para lograr los objetivos.

2. Resultados de aprendizaje

-Adopta una postura analítica y la transmite verbalmente en inglés (nivel C1.1).

-Argumenta y expresa por escrito ideas propias sobre aspectos estéticos y culturales de los textos audiovisuales en inglés, nivel C1.1.

-Asimila y adopta una actitud crítica hacia la bibliografía comentada o leída durante el curso.

-Comprende, identifica, analiza e interpreta distintos aspectos estéticos y culturales de los textos audiovisuales en lengua inglesa producidos entre 1925 y 1975.

-Construye análisis en inglés sobre los distintos aspectos estéticos y culturales de los textos audiovisuales producidos entre 1925 y 1975.

-Lee, escucha, asimila y rebate opiniones sobre aspectos concretos de la bibliografía o de los textos analizados.

-Identifica y utiliza con rigor los conceptos y herramientas necesarias para el análisis estético y cultural de los textos audiovisuales producidos entre 1925 y 1975.

-Analiza los textos y contextos estudiados durante el curso, construyendo una metodología aplicable a ejemplos prácticos diversos.

4. Actividades académicas

Actividades dirigidas

a) Clases teóricas. Metodología: Clase magistral. Presentación de los aspectos formales, históricos y culturales.

b) Clases prácticas. Metodología: Trabajo individual y en grupo. Comentario de películas y debates. Análisis guiado de fragmentos de películas.

Actividades supervisadas

a) Tutorias individuales y/o grupales. Metodología: Técnicas de asesoramiento individual y técnicas grupales participativas. Guía sobre la redacción de ensayos académicos y revisión de ensayos realizados.

Actividades autónomas

a) Realización de los ensayos. Visionado y análisis de los textos audiovisuales obligatorios y redacción de los ensayos correspondientes.

b) Estudio Personal.

4. Evaluación

a) Realización de prueba escrita teórico-práctica.

5. Sistema de evaluación

PRIMERA CONVOCATORIA

En función de variables como el número de estudiantes, se propondrá un sistema de evaluación continua para quienes asistan regularmente a clase, que consistirá en: 

a) Elaboración a lo largo del curso de cuatro ensayos académicos de 600 palabras sobre las películas obligatorias (60 % de la calificación) 

b) Elaboración de dos ensayos (800-1000 palabras) sobre dos temas relacionados con las lecturas obligatorias a elegir entre varias opciones planteadas por el profesorado (40%). 

c) La evaluación continua requerirá la asistencia y participación en las clases. 

 

Evaluación global

Prueba de evaluación global con las siguientes partes: 

Parte 1: Examen teórico (50%). Este examen constará de una serie de preguntas breves sobre las lecturas obligatorias. 

Parte 2: Redacción de ensayo académico corto (50%). Los alumnos tendrán que redactar un ensayo académico corto (800-1000 palabras) sobre una de las películas de visionado obligatorio, respondiendo a un concepto de análisis específico. 

Para aprobar la asignatura se deberá alcanzar un mínimo del 50% de la puntuación en cada una de las partes. 

 

SEGUNDA CONVOCATORIA 

Prueba de evaluación global igual a la existente para la primera convocatoria.

 

CRITERIOS DE EVALUACIÓN 

Para ambas convocatorias:
1.Capacidad de análisis y comprensión del aspecto formal específico de los textos audiovisuales. 

2.Capacidad argumentativa, organizativa y claridad expositiva.
3.Conocimiento básico de la historia del cine estadounidense entre 1925 y 1975.
4.Madurez y originalidad en las respuestas y/o en los ensayos.
5.Uso correcto de la lengua inglesa a un nivel mínimo de C1.
